Dog Bite Case

Two pre-teen boys hospitalized after pit bull attack. Two twelve-year-old boys were injured when they were attacked by a pit bull that was close to Lincoln Elementary School in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. The two boys were walking back from recess when the pit bull ran out of a yard. One of the boys claimed that they had very little warning when the dog attacked him and his friend, who required stitches for his injuries. The pit bull was taken into custody by animal control and placed in an animal shelter in Bergen County.

It was reported that this was the third time the animal was accused of biting people. The owner of this pit bull claimed that her dog is not vicious, but loveable. She has videotapes of the dog playing with a puppy, eating treats and dressed in a pink outfit. The Police Chief James O’Connor confirmed that this is the third time the dog escaped from its property and attacked someone. There are two schools and a daycare center within a couple of blocks of the house. O’Connor believes the supposedly domesticated dog is a menace and is looking for the dog to be declared a “vicious animal.”

This labeling would lead to the owner being forced to put up extensive fencing or to resort to euthanasia. The owner claimed that she would do whatever she can to prevent the dog from being put to death.

According to Dogsbite.org, a website with U.S. dog bite statistics, about 1,000 U.S. citizens each day require emergency treatment for dog bite injuries. Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, said that by compiling U.S. and Canadian press accounts between 1982 and 2012, the publication discovered the breeds most responsible for serious injury and death. The results showed that 79% of the attacks resulted in bodily harm, 72% of the attacks were to children, 85% of the attacks were to adults, 69% resulted in fatalities and 77% resulted in maiming. The list of offending dogs included pit bulls, Rottweilers and other aggressive breeds.
