Lawsuit for Range Rover, Land Rover & Jaguar Power Steering Failure
Reviewed by Mazie Slater’s experienced class action attorney [Matthew R. Mendelsohn – Member of Mazie Slater Katz & Freeman]
Mazie Slater is investigating claims related to alleged defects in the electronic power steering (EPS) systems found in model year 2018-2023 Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery, and Jaguar F-Pace vehicles.
Understanding the Power Steering Defect
Why the EPS System is Vulnerable to Water Intrusion
The EPS motor and electronic control module are integrated into the steering rack assembly, which is mounted low at the front of the vehicle on the subframe, beneath the engine bay and in close proximity to the wheel wells and underbody splash zones. This location places the EPS unit directly in an area routinely exposed to water, road spray, snow melt, and environmental moisture during ordinary and foreseeable driving and vehicle washing. Despite being installed in this high-exposure location, the EPS system is housed in a casing that is inadequately sealed against water intrusion.
What Happens When Water Enters the EPS Housing
As a result, water and moisture are able to enter the EPS housing through seams, gaskets, wiring pass-throughs, or connector interfaces, where they contact and damage sensitive electronic components within the EPS control module and motor assembly. When water intrusion occurs, the EPS electronics are subject to corrosion, short-circuiting, and electronic degradation, which causes intermittent or sudden loss of steering assist. The Power Steering Defect may manifest as warning messages, unpredictable changes in steering effort, or complete loss of power steering assistance, often without prior warning and during normal vehicle operation.
An Unreasonable Safety Hazard
Because the EPS system is both safety-critical and electronically controlled, its failure significantly increases the risk of loss of vehicle control. The sudden reduction or loss of steering assist requires drivers to exert substantially greater steering force than expected, particularly during low-speed maneuvers and turns, thereby creating an unreasonable safety hazard.
Common Warning Signs and Symptoms of the EPS Defect
Owners and lessees of affected Range Rover, Land Rover, and Jaguar vehicles have reported the following signs of EPS failure:
- “Power Steering Reduced” or “Power Steering Fault” warning message on the dashboard
- Steering wheel becoming suddenly heavy or extremely difficult to turn, especially at low speeds
- Intermittent loss of power steering assist, sometimes correcting itself before failing again
- Complete loss of steering assist, requiring significantly increased steering effort
- Failure occurring during or after driving in rain, wet roads, or after vehicle washing
- Dealer diagnosis identifying water intrusion or corrosion within the EPS motor or control module
- Repair estimates of $3,000–$5,000 or more for full steering rack replacement

-
What is the Power Steering Defect being investigated in this class action lawsuit?
The alleged defect involves the electronic power steering (EPS) system within certain models of the Range Rover, Jaguar, and Land Rover. The EPS is mounted low on the vehicle’s subframe in an area routinely exposed to water and road spray. Despite this placement, the EPS housing is allegedly inadequately sealed, allowing water and moisture to enter and damage internal electronics — leading to corrosion, short-circuiting, and loss of steering assist.
-
What are the signs of EPS failure in my Ranger Rover, Jaguar, or Land Rover vehicle?
Common signs include a “Power Steering Reduced” or “Power Steering Fault” warning message, a steering wheel that suddenly becomes heavy or difficult to turn (especially at low speeds), and failure that occurs during or after driving in wet conditions. Some drivers experience intermittent failures before a complete loss of steering assist.
-
What compensation may I be entitled to from this class action lawsuit?
Potential compensation may vary depending on the circumstances of your claim. Damages in class action and defective product cases can include reimbursement for out-of-pocket repair costs, diminished vehicle value, and other losses you may have suffered as a result of the EPS defect.
