Sexual Abuse in Juvenile Detention Facilities Operated by State of NJ

More brave survivors, both men and women, are continuing to come forward to demand justice after surviving childhood sexual abuse in juvenile detention centers across the State of New Jersey. Generations of New Jersey’s most vulnerable children are coming forward on the basis that they were abused, neglected, assaulted, and traumatized at the state’s juvenile detention facilities including the New Jersey Training School in Monroe Township, the Lloyd McCorkle Training School in Skillman, the Juvenile Medium Security Facility in Bordentown, the Female Secure Care and Intake Facility in Bordentown, and multiple other residential community homes (“RCH”).

So far, more than a hundred lawsuits have been filed. These individuals allege that they suffered physical injuries, pain, suffering, and emotional and psychological trauma as a result of the abuse they endured as children in the custody of the State at these juvenile detention facilities. Plaintiffs assert state law claims against the State for negligence; negligent training, supervision, and retention of employees and agents; negligent failure to enact and enforce policies that would prevent sexual abuse; and violation of Plaintiffs’ rights under the New Jersey Constitution.

The Supreme Court of New Jersey, after considering an application by one law firm handling such cases, has determined to designate cases involving allegations of sexual abuse in these juvenile detention facilities as a multicounty litigation (MCL). The New Jersey Supreme Court has assigned this MCL to Middlesex County for centralized case management to be handled by Superior Court Judge Bruce J. Kaplan.
