PFAS Water Contamination Lawsuit
Have you been diagnosed with liver cancer, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, or ulcerative colitis?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of human-made chemicals used in various industrial and consumer products since the 1950s. PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” contaminate drinking water supplies and groundwater in many locations.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with liver cancer, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, or ulcerative colitis, your condition may have been caused by drinking water contaminated with PFAS. Contact us today for a free consultation.
Confirmed PFAS Contamination
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has documented hundreds of incidents of contamination caused by spills of firefighting aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) containing dangerous PFAS “forever chemicals” across the United States. According to EPA records, these spills have ranged from hundreds to thousands of gallons, with many releasing toxic chemicals directly into local waterways and drinking water supplies. Drinking water is a major source of exposure, particularly in areas near industrial sites or military bases where PFAS have been used extensively.
Research shows that residents living near AFFF spill sites face significantly increased health risks from exposure to these toxic chemicals through contaminated drinking water. Many residents remain unaware that their past health conditions may be linked to nearby AFFF contamination sites.
PFAS pollution can also enter public water supplies through other means. For instance, industrial discharge of wastewater containing PFAS directly into rivers and lakes can seep into the groundwater. Runoff from sites where PFAS are manufactured or used can also carry these contaminants into surrounding water bodies. Landfills that receive waste containing PFAS can leach these substances into the groundwater, affecting both municipal and private wells. Agricultural practices, such as the use of biosolids (sewage sludge) as fertilizer, can also contribute to PFAS contamination in water supplies.
The Environmental Working Group and the U.S. Geological Survey have mapped the widespread contamination of drinking water by PFAS, showing just how destructive these chemicals have been to local water supplies across the country.
PFAS Lawsuits Are Ongoing
Individuals, communities, and governments across the country have been suing companies that leaked PFAS chemicals since 2010. Major lawsuits include:
- The State of Minnesota sued 3M for alleged PFAS leaks in the Twin Cities area. They settled for $850 million in 2018.
- Alabama water authorities sued 3M and Daikin America, Inc. and settled for $4 million.
- Thousands of West Virginia residents sued DuPont and The Chemours Company over hundreds upon hundreds of serious health conditions that were linked to PFAS contamination. The suit was settled for $921 million.
- New York and North Carolina state governments and authorities are currently pursuing legal action against companies that use PFAS chemicals.
